The holes are so you can screw a regular tripod mounting screw into the bottom of the camera to connect it securely to the stand. They're sized for ¼\" mounting screws as that's what the majority of handheld still cameras have (I only have one that has a different size). This orientation resulted in the cleanest curves on the rounded edges along the top without the need for supports.
