I fell in love with the \u003ca target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thingiverse.com\/thing:904824\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"\u003eart vase 3 created by Edmund Keefe\u003c\/a\u003e and figured \"Why not combine them and make a couple changes to the mechanism?\"\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIn addition to remixing the lamp, I wanted to add a little more stability and make it so the \u003ca target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B07Q4MGLF1\/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s01?ie=UTF8\u0026amp;psc=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"\u003elight socket\u003c\/a\u003e and \u003ca target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B07P8Q5N3B\/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8\u0026amp;psc=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"\u003ecord\u003c\/a\u003e sets I bought off Amazon screwed directly into the top that supports the shade. My other goals were to need no supports and print easily. Oh, and in the spirit of full disclosure, I had never modeled anything before and had only been 3D printing for a few months.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eShould print fine without supports\u003cbr\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eHow I Designed This ===================\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eMaking the base\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI downloaded the art_vase_3.stl and attempted to import it into \u003ca target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tinkercad.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"\u003eTinkercad\u003c\/a\u003e. This immediately resulted in an error because Tinkercad has a 25mb file limit and the stl was close to 40mb. A quick google search resulted in a suggestion to use \u003ca target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.meshmixer.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"\u003eMeshmixer\u003c\/a\u003e to shrink the file, so here is what I did.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003col\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eDownload and install Meshmixer from the link. \u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eOpen Meshmixer\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eImport the art\\_vase\\_3.stil file. \u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eSelect all, (ctrl-A) \u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eEdit \u0026gt; Reduce \u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eI accepted the defaults of Reduce Target: Percentage, Reduce type: Shape Preserving, and Percentage of 50% and clicked \"Accept\" \u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eOnce it was done, I went to File \u0026gt; Export and exported as .stl\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ol\u003e\u003cp\u003eBack to Tinkercad and a quick attempt to import the file again, which resulted in a new error that there were too many triangles as Tinkercad can only import files with a max of 300,000 triangles. Grrrrr\u003c\/p\u003e\u003col\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eOpen Meshmixer, (again)\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eImport the art_vase_3.stil file, (again).\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eSelect all, (again).\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eEdit \u0026gt; Reduce, (again).\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e This time I change Reduce Target to Triangle Budget, set it to around 280,000 and clicked “Accept”\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eOnce it was done, I went to File \u0026gt; Export and exported as .stl, (again)\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ol\u003e\u003cp\u003eNow it would import into Tinkercad, yay! Once imported, I used the polygon tool to model a base, aligned the vase and the base to each other, sunk the vase into the base, and then used some cylinders to punch out a hole in the bottom and a channel for the cord. Since the current size of the vase doesn't look right with the lampshade, I lowered the overall height to 150mm and grouped everything together. A quick export to .stl and rename and that became art_lamp_base.stl\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eMaking the top\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBecause I wanted the socket to screw into the top and still support the lampshade, I knew I needed to combine some more files. I had no idea how to model threads, so I searched Thingiverse for the keyword e26 hoping someone had already done it. Bingo! Raul Machado had posted \u003ca target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thingiverse.com\/thing:2829983\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"\u003eLamp Nut\u003c\/a\u003e which was exactly what I needed for the threads.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI imported lamp_nut.stl from there and lampshade-support2.stl from \u003ca target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thingiverse.com\/thing:2903763\/files\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"\u003eJulian's LED Lamp make\u003c\/a\u003e and then aligned and centered them.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI then used the cylinder tool to fill in the open space between them and grouped them together into one object. Since I wanted this to sit firmly on top of the base, I used the torus tool to make a channel in the underside of the object so it could sit on the top of the base. One more grouping and export and art_lamp_top.stl was born!\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eDesigning the Lampshade\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003col\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eI went into Photoshop and created a new file that was 4000 pixels x 1335 pixels. \u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eI then added each of the photos I wanted to make the shade as layers and sized\/moved them around until they covered the canvas. \u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eNext up I made them a bit more \"lithophane friendly\" by converting them to black \u0026amp; white and adjusting the exposure, contrast, and clarity.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eNext I went to \u003ca target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/3dp.rocks\/lithophane\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"\u003ehttp:\/\/3dp.rocks\/lithophane\u003c\/a\u003e and uploaded my composite image. \u003col\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eI chose the \"Outer Curve\" type and set the following values:\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eModel Settings- Set Max Size to 400 and Curve to 360\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eImage Settings- Select Positive Image\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eAfter changing the settings, I clicked refresh and, once it finished rendering, I downloaded the .stl\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ol\u003e\n\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ol\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSlicing\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI used Cura 4.0 and printed on an Ender 3 so my settings are pretty basic.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eLamp bottom and top were both sliced to print at 210 with a bed temp of 60. 5% infill, no supports, full cooling fan, 60mms print speed, and a skirt.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eDesign by conan.lloyd on MakerWorld (license: BY).\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Mymadmanlab","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":67382539911472,"sku":null,"price":16.99,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0987\/0809\/5280\/files\/0_81a711e8-253e-4f84-b168-2c8c1f5f036c.jpg?v=1784479235","url":"https:\/\/mymadmanlab.com\/products\/lithophane-art-lamp","provider":"Mymadmanlab.com","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
