Most spool desiccant containers on MakerWorld are designed to hold as much desiccant as possible. This design takes a different approach: it is optimized for one spool, not the entire dry box.

The container mounts along the perimeter of the spool and holds approximately 17 g of silica gel, which is typically sufficient to keep a single spool dry while using significantly less desiccant and filament than larger designs.

Why this design?

  • Material-efficient – uses only the amount of desiccant needed for one spool.
  • Lightweight – adds minimal weight to the spool.
  • Space-efficient – follows the spool perimeter and stays out of the way.
  • Fast to print – open lattice structure minimizes print time and filament consumption.
  • Excellent airflow – large mesh openings expose the silica gel to circulating air for effective moisture absorption.
  • Easy to refill – simply open, refill, and reuse.

Capacity

  • Approximate silica gel capacity: 17 g
  • Intended use: one container per spool

Printing Recommendations

  • No supports required.
  • Print with 2–3 perimeters for good durability.
  • PETG, ASA, or ABS are recommended for long-term use.
  • The integrated mesh is designed to provide high airflow while retaining common indicating silica gel beads.

Notes

This design was created to answer a simple question:

Why use 40–60 g of desiccant and a large printed container when a spool only needs a fraction of that?

By reducing both desiccant volume and printed material, this container keeps spools dry while remaining compact, lightweight, and economical.

If you print one, I'd love to see your make and hear how it performs with different spool brands and storage setups.
