Ichthys (also spelled Ichthus, from the Greek: ἰχθύς) is an ancient Christian symbol consisting of two intersecting arcs that resemble the profile of a fish. The word "ichthys" is the Greek word for "fish," but early Christians used it as an acrostic for:

• Iēsous (Ἰησοῦς) – Jesus
• Christos (Χριστός) – Christ
• Theou (Θεοῦ) – of God
• Huios (Υἱός) – Son
• Sōtēr (Σωτήρ) – Savior

Put together: “Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior.”

The symbol was used by early Christians as a secret sign to identify one another, especially during times of persecution.
