An open-source gadget hook generator for openGrid. This model creates hooks that screw into openGrid self-expanding snaps. While other hook generators are available for the openGrid system, this model addresses some specific use cases, especially for Underware users who want to hang items under a desk. The gadget hook is reasonably strong while staying space- and filament-efficient.

Several example .stl files are included, with the parameters used to generate them in the file names.

Customization guide:

  1. Choose "snap_thickness". Select "Standard" or "Lite", based on the snap version you are using.
  2. Choose "hook_shape_type". Select "Centered", "Straight", or "Loop". See the images for examples of each option.
  3. Choose "corner_type". Select "Circular" or "Rectangular". Use "Circular" for the default curved hook, or "Rectangular" for a more squared-off shape.
  4. Adjust the hook reach. Use "hook_main_size" and "hook_stem_length". "hook_main_size" controls the main bend or loop size, while "hook_stem_length" controls how far the hook extends from the threaded base before the bend starts. Increase these values for a larger hook.
  5. Adjust the hook body. Use "hook_width" and "hook_thickness". "hook_width" changes the side-to-side width, while "hook_thickness" changes the front-to-back thickness. Increase these values for a sturdier hook.
  6. Optional: adjust miscellaneous options:
    • "hook_thickness_scale" - lower this to make the hook thinner toward the tip, or set it to 1 for a consistent thickness.
    • "hook_tip_angle" - change the tip arc angle of Straight and Centered hooks.
    • "threads_offset_angle" - change this to make the hook face a different direction when fully tightened.

The model is open-source under the CC-BY-SA license. Like all the OpenSCAD models I've designed for openGrid, it can be found in this GitHub repository. Feel free to use the code; feedback and suggestions are welcome.

2025-11-22 Update: The threads now have a blunt start by default, which should help prevent cross-threading and overtightening. Blunt threads have a decorative "lock" symbol at the bottom. If you want to use this model with David's original snaps, change "threads_type" to "Basic" in the customizer.
