Simple Bird Water Bowl for Your Garden
Hello everyone,
About a year ago, my wife asked me to design a simple water bowl for birds that could be placed directly into the lawn in our garden. At first, we used an ordinary plastic plate filled with water, but we quickly discovered an unexpected problem.
Crows are incredibly intelligent birds.
During hot summer days, they would grab the edge of the plate with their beaks, tip it over, and turn the whole thing into an instant bird shower.
Entertaining to watch, but not very practical if your goal is to keep fresh drinking water available for smaller birds.
After some thinking, I came up with a simple solution. The bird bath is designed to be mounted onto a 10 mm aluminum tube driven into the ground with a hammer. A sufficiently deep mounting hole inside the model allows the bowl to be easily removed for cleaning and maintenance, while preventing birds from lifting or tipping it over.
The rim around the water bowl serves two purposes:
- It provides a comfortable perch for birds while drinking.
- It gently pushes surrounding grass away from the water area, preventing tall grass from obstructing access to the water.
The first version was installed in our garden in 2025 and printed entirely from PLA. It survived sun, rain, and changing seasons without any issues until spring 2026, when it unfortunately met its end under a lawn mower. Since the grassy area is a public space, the accident was probably unavoidable. The good news is that printing a replacement takes only a short time.
Installation
- Drive a 10 mm aluminum tube into the ground.
- Slide the bird bath onto the tube.
- Fill with fresh water.
- Enjoy watching your garden visitors.
Printing Notes
- Printed successfully in standard PLA / PETG
- No special settings required, but more walls in standard 0.2mm layer is better
- Easy to clean and maintain.
- Suitable for gardens, orchards, and other outdoor spaces.
