Summary:
A lithophane of the "Cat on Stairs" optical illusion. Does he go up or down the stairs?
Model Description:
A lithophane is a picture converted into 3d format by using more layers for darker pixels, once you hold it in front of a lightsource the image appears very distinctly.
The lithophane was created using Lithophane Maker (Flat Lithophane Section), a free and easy tool to create lithophanes. The original images were provided as well as the settings used to make this lithophane would you want to recreate it in the tool.
Printing Info:
- Use 5 border layers to ensure it is all neatly filled in
- Use a white filament that allows light to pass through (Here I used Winkle Natural ASA which gives a yellow tint but Winkle Marble PLA works really well too and has a more cold white tone)
- Print it vertically for the details and use a brim to avoid it toppleling over
The origin of the illusion of the image is unclear, the earliest mention that I could find in a reasonable time was here: https://twitter.com/Timeless_Misfit/status/585850253557030912 [08/04/15]. The illusion depicts a cat that can been seen going up or down the stairs.
