Customizable Olympic Plate Barbell Adapter

There are a couple models already available, but none of them fit my equipment well so I designed a file that can be easily customized. Then you can use your Olympic weight plates on a standard size bar or even on standard size dumbbells. I used PET-CF which is very strong and would recommend using something strong as well, ABS should be ok or any carbon fiber variety of other materials including PLA-CF.

 

The settings below are for PET-CF, for materials such as PLA-CF or ABS I would increase the Sparse Infill Density and you could probably leave the speeds as is.

How to Customize

  • Measure your equipment (standard barbell/dumbbell diameter, Olympic plate hole diameter, and Olympic plate hole depth)
  • Go to MakerLab and then Parametric Model Maker
  • Open this model there
  • Enter your equipment sizes into the parameters (Inner Diameter Base, Outer Diameter Body, and Height Body per above)
  • Adjust the Height Lip and Outer Diameter Lip as desired (I did 3mm using PET-CF, for materials that are not as strong I would do more)
  • Be sure to include a slight buffer on your measurements (I found -0.5mm on Outer Diameter Body and +0.5mm on Inner Diameter Base is ideal)

Recommended Settings

These are for all filaments

  • Quality → Print Infill First
  • Strength → Wall loops: 4
  • Strength → Top shell layers: 5
  • Strength → Sparse infill density: 60%
  • Strength → Sparse infill pattern: Tri-hexagon (Gyroid is good too)

These are for PET-CF only

  • Filament → Build Plate: Textured PEI Plate at 100 degrees
  • Filament → Cooling → Min fan speed threshold: 0% / 7s
  • Filament → Cooling → Max fan speed threshold: 0% / 7s
  • Filament → Cooling → Min print speed: 10 mm/s
  • Filament → Cooling → Fan speed: 0%
  • Speed → Outer wall: 30 mm/s
  • Speed → Inner wall: 55 mm/s
  • Speed → Sparse infill: 80 mm/s
  • Speed → Internal solid infill: 80 mm/s
  • Speed → Top surface: 100 mm/s
  • Speed → Outer wall acceleration: 200 mm/s2
  • Speed → Sparse infill acceleration: 900 mm/s2
  • Others → Print sequence: By object (this is very important if you are printing multiples with PET-CF)

I'll post a GitHub link to the OpenSCAD file soon. Also, I will add just the bottom portion too so that you can have a spacer and don't need to worry about the orientation and using other plates to make sure things are locked in. Printer is busy right now.
