They're little clips to keep pairs of knitting needles together. Use them to just keep your needles together in pairs, or on either side of something you're currently knitting to help keep the work on the needles. I bet they work on crochet hooks, but I don't crochet, so they aren't tested that way (plus, do crocheters ever use two?).
They're designed to be strong and efficient; they print solid, but they're only 3mm thick, so a full set of two of each is still only 5.6g.
