This is a small lens mounted teleprompter, that uses a small tablet or large phone for running the script and a sample teleprompter mirror to do the splitting of light and providing a clear image.

 

It's designed around the 6"x6" sample mirrors sold at https://telepromptermirror.com/sample/, specifically the 3mm thick version in either the 30R/70T or 40R/60T variation.

 

The teleprompter attaches in place of the lens hood and uses the same mechanism and there are two different versions:

  • One for Canon 24-105 F4 lens
  • One for Nikon 24-70 F2.8 (HB-40)

There might be other lenses that share the same mount, but I have only tested with the two lenses above.

 

As the glass is relatively small, both of the above lenses will need to be zoomed in to around 35-40mm, as otherwise part of the teleprompter will be visible in the picture frame.

 

The Canon lens have the mounting point on the part that moves while zooming and hence does not protrude into the teleprompter, but the Nikon lens have it slightly different, where the inner part of the lens protrudes when zooming, to be careful not to poke the glass.

 

The glass is simply snapped into place and hold there using small notches on both sides. When mounting the glass, make sure to wipe off fingerprints, especially on the inside and have the reflective side on the outside. Both sides are pretty shiny, but when you hold up something and touch the glass (eg. a finger nail), if the reflection is “touching” the actual tip of your finger nail, that is the reflective side. The other side will show a small spacing (a few millimeters) between your nail and the reflection. This exercise will ensure a clean image without the ghosting effect seen with a normal mirror or glass.

 

To mount the brackets for the tablet, insert 4 M3 brass, heat set inserts in the main part and screw in the two brackets using 2 M3 x 12mm screws in each bracket.

 

The teleprompter mounts to the lens in the same way as the normal lens hood, by inserting it at an angle and then twisting it until you hear and feel a small click and the teleprompter sits level.

 

As the tablet is not affixed, but only laying on the two brackets, this is not ideal for a mobile setup where the camera moves, but it makes it easy to prep scripts and place the tablet back under the mirror in a small studio setup where the camera is mounted on a tripod, often not too far away.
