The idea for these drawers came from Slant3D https://youtu.be/CpQGNRWWXs8?si=QHXpt7TaxTVs_ryD. The OpenSCAD implementation is all mine. 😊

 

UPDATE August 19, 2024:  A few enhancements and a bug fix:

  • Drawers can be divided laterally.  
  • Add text output for two color printing
  • Fixed a calculation so that left & right edges are modeled symmetrically

Features:

  • Print-in-place
  • Non-visible walls are perforated to save plastic (~20%, depending on design choices)
  • Drawer cases printed at equal widths can be easily tie-wrapped or wired together for stability.  The tie wrap holes are added every 40mm in case you are printing drawers not too deep (it was originally a single set of holes 80mm from the front.

Customizer notes (updates in green):.

  • Chest width s/b self-explanatory.  Drawer widths in a row are equal and derived from chest width.
  • Chest depth is front-to-back distance excluding the handles. 
  • Drawer row heights determines the z-dimension of the drawers (z in use, not on build plate), from bottom-to-top.  Four rows is a limit of the customizer, not the SCAD code.  Set row height to 0 to have fewer rows.  Bypass the customizer for more than four rows.
  • Drawer row counts is number of drawers in each row, from bottom-to-top. In the OpenSCAD console, the code prints out the resulting drawer widths for each row.
  • Num compartments per drawer – Set to 1 for no dividers.  Any number greater than 1 will add some internal tabs to each drawer to hold dividers.  All drawers get the same number of compartments.  The internal tabs are really small and shouldn't be an issue if you want dividers in some drawers and not others.  When this option is enabled, the program will provide one divider per row.  It's up to you to dump the divider STL from your slicer and print as many as you need.
  • Num lateral compartments – Set to 1 for no dividers.  It's more space efficient to print a wide drawer with lateral dividers, than many small drawers.
  • Drawer shell gap is space between drawers and drawer case.  See warnings.  This variable is replaced by drawer_shell_gap_h for horizontal spacing, drawer_shell_gap_v for vertical spacing.  I was trying to find a solution to the noise (see warnings), decided to leave the variables as modified.
  • printDrawerTextBoolean – when adding text to the front of the drawers, this Boolean set to True will output only the text.  See below on setting drawerTextList.
  • Shell thick is the thickness of the “container” for the drawers.  I find 1.6 to be adequate, I know some of you will prefer a more robust print.
  • Drawer thick is the thickness of the drawers themselves.  1.2 should be good enough for most applications.

Bypassing the customizer:

  • You can have more than 4 rows of drawers
  • You can modify drawerTextList to add text to the front of your drawers.  I left this out of the customizer intentionally because text is problematic, wrt installed fonts, font sizes, etc.  drawerTextList should be a list of lists when num_lateral_compartments is 1.  When num_lateral_compartments is > 1, drawerTextList is a list of lists of lists.  Free advice: download and use Overpass font, it's great for 3d printing.

Warnings:

  • With a 0.6 nozzle and 0.6 drawer shell gap, I had no stuck drawers.  When I used 0.5 gap, some drawers needed to be freed with a bit of force (knocked with the blunt end of a screw driver)
  • These cases of drawers need a lot of filament.  The drawer shown used about 400g of filament each.  Print time on X1C was over 12 hours.
  • The drawers are noisy going in and out – layer lines rubbing against layer lines.  I played with different drawer-shell gaps, and couldn't fix it.
