An Egyptian obelisk is a tall, four-sided, tapering stone monument with a pyramidal top, typically made from a single piece of granite. These obelisks were often erected at temple entrances and were associated with the sun god Ra, symbolizing solar power, stability, and divine connection. Their surfaces were covered in hieroglyphic inscriptions dedicated to pharaohs and deities, commemorating military victories, religious devotion, or significant events.
The earliest obelisks date back to the Old Kingdom (c. 2600 BCE), but they became more prominent during the New Kingdom (c. 1550–1070 BCE). The most famous examples include the Luxor Obelisk (now in Paris), the obelisks of Karnak, and those relocated to Rome, London, and New York. Transporting these massive structures—sometimes over 30 meters (98 feet) tall—required incredible engineering, using wooden sleds and barges on the Nile.
Obelisks served both spiritual and political purposes, reinforcing a ruler’s power and connection to the gods. Today, they stand as enduring symbols of Egyptian craftsmanship and influence, inspiring later civilizations, including Rome and modern Western societies.
