Description

My wife has been complaining about the outlets in our house giving a bad aesthetic when not in use. We couldn't find a simple plain cover that she liked so I decided to make one! She wanted it to be tight enough to stay in place yet easily removable, aesthetically pleasing by removing sharp corners and having a solid plain smooth face. 

 

When making this we also realized that this may work well when we have children around to prevent items being erroneously shoved into sockets, but we've not tested this yet. It's possible that the hold is weak enough that a kid would be able to pry it off or something like that. If you have kids and try this out, feel free to provide feedback so I can improve the design and make it work better for everyone!

Printing notes

This MUST be printed vertically as provided in the print profile and shown in the image below.

 This orientation provides by far the strongest and most durable plugs. I printed test plugs in multiple orientations and had the following results:

  • Flat on the back, pins up - the layer lines make these weak. Although this is the only orientation without supports, the plug will break off into your outlet. It's not an if, it's a when.
  • On the side - this is much stronger than on the back, but the plug pins are now too stiff and break easily when rocked back and forth (like when removing a cover plate).
  • Standing up (recommended) - This was the most flexible orientation by a long shot. Due to the layer line orientation, the pins could bend quite far before cracking or snapping. I trust this orientation, I don't trust the others.

Caution

This model goes into an electrical outlet. It won't cause an electrical fire (just don't use conductive plastic) but it may break off inside the outlet rendering the outlet useless. I don't think this will happen easily as I've put test plugs under heat and stress but I don't have long term data. This doesn't bother me because I know how to replace outlets if one breaks, but you should use at your own discretion. 

 

Again, I think failure is unlikely, but you have been cautioned.

Possible modifications

What are some remixes that may work well with this? Here are some ideas for the future!

  • Cover for other types of face plates (this one is only going to work on the face plate type pictured)
  • Custom holes punched out of a face plate to allow specific items to be plugged in without the rest of the outlet showing (ex. rectangle to fit a USB wall plug)
  • A cover for the cover that snaps over top of the existing box so that the external face can be printed fat on the bed enabling use of AMS to put pictures and things on it.
