Important Notes:

  • The uploaded STLs are designed to allow the liners to be printed in single monolithic pieces. You will need insert a pause in your slicer after the last layer of what Ratta calls "layer 2", insert the hall sensor magnets and/or magnet shields in the correct orientation, and resume printing for the last layer. These pauses are included in the uploaded print profile.

    IF you prefer to print the layers individually (which I do not recommend), the OpenSCAD file has a flag which will allow you to do so.
  • DO NOT insert the screws during the print. If you do, the nozzle will hit the screw shafts while printing the final layer. Instead, insert the screws after the print is done, and if desired, glue in the round spacers to fill the empty space in the first layer.
  • Two versions of the STLs are uploaded: one with a "thin" liner, and one in which the total thickness of the covers has been increased to 2.5 mm for added stiffness. You can adjust this thickness in the OpenSCAD file if you prefer something different.

Printing tips:

  • The uploaded STLs are optimized for an 0.2 mm layer height (the component thicknesses from Ratta's technical drawings are rounded up to the nearest 0.2 mm). If you want to print with a different layer height, load the OpenSCAD file and change the layer_height parameter in the customizer.

    Note also that the "thin" layers in Ratta's design (the ones that are marked as 0.2 mm thick) have been increased to 0.4 mm so that the magnets are covered by 2 layers of filament rather than one. If you wish to change this, change the "min_layer_num" parameter in the OpenSCAD file.
  • Print the tester.stl file BEFORE you print the entire project, and make sure that the magnet shielding squares, screws, and hall magnets fit in the corresponding holes. If they don't, adjust your slicer's X-Y hole compensation as needed until they fit.
  • If you have trouble with the print not correctly bridging over the magnets & magnet shields after these are inserted and the print is resumed, try the following:

    • Enable the "thick bridge" option in your slicer (this is what it is called in Bambu Studio - may have other names in other slicers).
    • Wipe down the magnet shields and Hall sensor magnets with rubbing alcohol to remove fingerprints before inserting.

      CAUTION: the mark Ratta uses to indicate the "north" side of the Hall sensor magnets WILL wash off with rubbing alcohol. If you do this, be very careful to not lose track of the correct orientation of the magnet!

Assembly:

  • Insert the Hall sensor magnets and magnet shields during printing as noted above.
  • After printing, insert the screws and screw in the magnets that secure the device.
  • If desired, insert the circular "plugs" for the screw holes on the outside of the back cover and glue in place.
  • Glue in a pen loop.
  • Glue the liners (with magnets) to your cover material of choice.
  • Let the glue cure, and then enjoy your new folio!
