Description

This is a remix of a remix.  This link will take you to the original at Thingiverse.  Version 4 adds a side extension to widen the shade.  The modification ends up stiffening the assembled model.  The base component was beefed up.  The only untouched parts from Version 3.1 are the left and right clips.

Version 3.1 was a complete rework of IronGoober's “Car sun visor extension”.  Added hard stops, knurled surfaces to grip the existing sun visor, resized to fit the X1 series build plate, and reduced overall thickness of the model.  Not designed for any specific automobile, but it should fit most.  Can modify upon request.

Printing

PLA is not recommended, as it will not hold up well in a vehicle during the summer months.  Recommend a more robust material with higher temperature resistance.  0.4mm nozzle, 0.2mm layer height.  No support required.

Version 4 print profile in ABS should hold up in higher temperatures.  I didn't see any warping while printing, but saw some warp after removing from the build plate.  Should have allowed the part to cool completely before removing.

Version 4.2 adds optional left and right clips for thicker sun visors (28mm).  The 8° option does not clamp as hard as the 10°, but is less likely to break.

No additional hardware required.

Assembly

It is important to assemble the clips last (step 4).  Use this sequence:

  1. Snap the two long Rails onto the flat side of the Slide (has 12 tiny holes).  Pinch each post firmly to snap each into the holes.  @SupremeTele suggested using a bit-holder to assist this endeavor (see comment and picture below).
  2. Slide the Side Extension (with the long grooves) onto the rails orienting the rounded corners of the Side Extension with the rounded corners of the Slide.  The front edges will line up if done correctly.
  3. Orient the Base (has large holes and a truss like structure) so that the Clip Connectors are facing away from the Slide, and so that when the front edge of the Base and Slide line up the locking mechanism is in the first large hole closest to the rear of the base.  See the pictures above, and the assembly video.
  4. Now slide the Clips onto the Base Clip Connectors while keeping the Base and Slide mated.  The interlocking keys are offset to ensure proper orientation.  Optionally, you can add a drop of glue to each connector, but I have found this unnecessary.  The clips will be difficult to remove after assembly.

Note that the Assembly Video uses Version 4.0.  The current version (4.1) replaces the two shorter Rails with a single long one.  Assembly is similar.

Revision History

V3 4/5/2025 - Initial Release

V3.1 4/6/2025 - Increased clip strength, new ABS print profile.  3.1 parts not compatible with version 3.0.  Link

V4.0 7/13/2025 - Added side extension.  Thanks to @OniiChanz for the suggestion.

V4.1 7/14/2025 - Combined the two short rails into one long one to smooth operation.

V4.2 9/15/2025 - Added print profiles for two 28mm diameter clips, 8° and 10°.  Backward compatible with all versions.  Use for thicker sun visors.
