Why I designed this:

After years of frustration with the original faucet cover constantly falling off every time I turned it off, I decided it was time for a permanent fix. The original cover, which had been in place for over 25 years, spent more time off than on—it was beyond annoying. Since I have a 3D printer, I figured, why not design and print my cover that stays in place?

I wanted something that fit snugly and wouldn't come off in my hand while using the faucet but could also be easily removed if I ever needed to service the ceramic cartridge. This new design offers a secure friction fit, solving the problem once and for all. It's a practical, durable replacement for a cover that had outlived its usefulness

How I Designed This:

I started with the original faucet cover, which was badly worn out, and used it as a reference for my design. I took measurements and devised a plan, but when I printed the first version, it didn’t fit. That’s when I decided to use my Calipers to measure the inside of the faucet opening. I printed another version …. and that one also didn't fit.

After some trial and error, I realized my printer was 0.74mm off when printing to specific sizes. So, I scrapped my original design and started over, this time adjusting for the size discrepancy. I used Fusion 360 to create the new model, utilizing techniques like offset planes, the pattern tool, and the extrude command. It took far more drafts, redrawing, and tweaking than I’m comfortable admitting.

With multiple cans of energy drinks and far too little sleep, I eventually achieved success! The process reminded me of the Monty Python “castle in the swamp” reference—it took a few tries, but in the end, I’m happy with the result. I learned a lot along the way, and now I have a functional design that fits perfectly!
