This amazing puzzle comes originally from the amazing puzzle maker Stewart Coffin (website here) found in chapter 4 of his collection The Puzzling World of Polyhedral Dissections. Other 3D printable puzzles of his can be found here, some of which I may try to model myself too one day!
Description
This puzzle is a classic wood working puzzle project. I originally came across it in the YouTube video below and wanted to 3D print it. I searched on MakerWorld but wasn't completely satisfied with the other options already available so I decided to just model it myself!
What sets this version apart?
There are 3 things that I think make this a better version of the puzzle to print than other models I've seen here so far.
- Has a reference - I've included a completed version of the puzzle as a solid object to print along side the pieces. The shape can be a little tricky to get your head around and I almost guarantee that no one would be able to build the shape without knowing what they were targeting first. You don't NEED the reference, but I think it makes the process of putting it together feel much more fair without giving hints about where any individual piece goes (since, you know, it's a separate solid part).
- Standardized Clearances - All the pieces have a standardized clearance from other pieces on them so the pieces feel like they can fit anywhere. Other models I've looked at only added clearance where needed to actually build the correct solution which felt frustrating when I wanted pieces to fit in a certain way and it was simply too tight. I've added .4mm between all the pieces so they feel like they can fit any-which-way.
- Source included - Want to change the cube size? Want tighter tolerances? Well I've included the parametric FreeCAD file to do just that without needing to re-draw anything.
Printing details
For this print I've used the PLA support filament because it gives a nice finish on the underside of flat parts. Most Bambu printer owners should have some since I believe a bit comes with all printers. If not, you'll need to adjust the support settings. Other than that, load the file and print away!
NOTE: The filament in my example photo is Bambu WoodPLA since I was experimenting with it, but any filament should work fine.
