Stop hunting for the right-length wooden dowel. No cutting or painting. This Threaded Modular Dowel System is a customizable, 3D-printable solution for hanging banners, tapestries, wall hangings, and macramé. Dowels are 13mm (1/2 inch) diameter. Whether you need a short rod or longer for wall hanging, simply print the number of segments you need and screw them together! The threaded design ensures a flush, sturdy connection, while the decorative end caps provide a polished, professional look for your craft projects. UPDATE: Added STLs for “Middle” F-F connection if needed.
Dowels and extenders are included with multiple lengths from 10mm to 250mm long. Start with one dowel. Then add extenders by threading together as many as you need:
- Infinite Length: Add as many center segments as your project requires.
- End Caps: Several styles of rod end caps included with multiple choice of facets/faces.
- Travel-Friendly: Breaks down easily for transport to craft fairs or conventions.
- Tool-Free Assembly: High-tolerance threads screw together by hand in seconds.
- Matching Wall Hanging Support: Print a matching wall hanging support with the same filament. Two options for mounting; single screw or picture hook style nail.
- No Sanding or Messy Painting: Just choose your favorite filament to match your project style.
Printing Recommendations
- Supports: Required for thread overhangs and first few layers of the dowel.
- Orientation: Dowels print horizontal for the greatest dowel strength.
- Wall Loops: 4 walls provide rigidity and help with the threads.
- Infill: 15% Any default should be good.
- Brim: Yes (Outer Only) for small areas attached to the build plate.
- Layer Height: 0.16mm – 0.20mm. Keeps the threads tight and functional.
Pro Tips:
- If the threads feel a bit tight on the first assembly, just "work" them back and forth a few times. The friction will smooth out any minor layer inconsistencies for a perfect fit. Be careful at first to avoid cross-threading.
- Test sliding the two wall hanger parts together before mounting. Tightness will vary with selection of filament and print settings and can be hard to insert and remove.
