Twist-Flute Parametric Vase

Make your own modern vase in a few clicks. This model was built so anyone can dial in a shape they like—smooth, gently twisted, or boldly fluted—and then add subtle details like a foot ring or rim bead. The gallery shows a few examples: a smooth hourglass, a soft bulb/pouch with flutes, and a shallow bowl on a braided stem. All of them come from the same set of controls.

The vase is generated as a true shell with a sealed bottom. An optional thin base pad improves stability on slick build plates.

Quick start

  1. Pick a preset below (or start from defaults).
  2. Adjust Size first, then Flutes & Twist, then any Flourishes.
  3. Print as a classic vase (spiralize/single wall) or as a sturdy multi-wall piece.

Controls (what does what)

Size

  • height_mm – Overall height.
  • base_diameter_mm – Diameter at the very bottom.
  • belly_gain_mm – How much the middle bulges out (0 = straight sides).
  • neck_diameter_mm – Narrowest section below the mouth.
  • mouth_diameter_mm – Opening width at the top.

Walls & Base

  • wall_thickness_mm – Real wall thickness. Choose a multiple of your line width (e.g., 1.2 / 1.6 / 2.0 mm for a 0.4 nozzle).
  • base_thickness_mm – Thickness of the solid internal floor.
  • thin_base_enable / thin_base_thickness_mm / thin_base_lip_mm – Adds a thin external pad for stability (nice alternative to a brim).

Flutes & Twist

  • flutes – Number of grooves; 0 = perfectly smooth.
  • flute_depth_mm – Groove depth (higher = more dramatic).
  • flute_fade_frac – Soft fade-in/out near base and mouth (0.10–0.25 looks natural).
  • twist_deg_total – Total twist from bottom to top (0–360°). Subtle 30–90° reads modern; 180°+ is bold.

Flourishes (optional)

  • flourish_foot_enable / foot_height_mm / foot_extra_radius_mm – A short foot ring to “lift” the vase and increase contact area.
  • rim_bead_enable / rim_bead_radius_mm / rim_bead_outset_mm / rim_bead_offset_down_mm – A soft bead around the lip for a finished top edge.
  • mid_band_enable / band_z_frac / band_radius_mm / band_outset_mm – Single decorative band; place it anywhere from bottom (0.0) to top (1.0).
  • ribs_enable / ribs_count / rib_radius_mm / rib_inset_mm / rib_height_frac – Vertical ribs around the lower section for a more architectural look.

Quality

  • segments_height – Vertical smoothness. Higher values look cleaner; lower values give a polygonal look.

Presets (copy these values and tweak)

Smooth Hourglass

  • height 200, base Ø 90, belly +10, neck Ø 70, mouth Ø 85
  • flutes 0, twist 90
  • wall 1.6, base 3
  • optional rim_bead_enable = true (bead radius ~1.0, outset 0.6, down 0.5)

Soft Pouch / Bulb

  • height 160, base Ø 110, belly +35, neck Ø 60, mouth Ø 95
  • flutes 12–18, flute_depth 1.5–2.5, fade 0.15–0.22, twist 120
  • thin_base_enable = true, thin_base_thickness 1.2, thin_base_lip 1–2

Braided Column with Dish

  • height 180, base Ø 70, belly +0, neck Ø 60, mouth Ø 180
  • flutes 18–24, flute_depth 2.0–3.0, fade ~0.12, twist 180–240
  • rim_bead_enable = true for a crisp lip

Minimal Cylinder with Foot

  • height 180, base/neck/mouth Ø 110, belly +0
  • flutes 0, twist 0
  • foot ring enabled, foot_height 2–3, foot_extra_radius 2–4

Subtle Spiral

  • height 220, base Ø 95, belly +12, neck Ø 70, mouth Ø 85
  • flutes 32, flute_depth 0.8–1.2, fade ~0.10, twist 60–90

Printing notes

  • Vase style:
    • Spiralize/single wall: set wall_thickness_mm near one line width (e.g., ~1.0–1.2 mm with a 0.4 nozzle) and use 0 top layers, 0% infill.
    • Multi-wall decorative: use 2–4 perimeters and set wall_thickness_mm to a multiple of your line width (e.g., 1.6–2.4 mm).
  • Base: 2–3 mm is light and fast; 4–6 mm gives more weight.
  • Adhesion: Prefer the built-in thin_base over slicer brims if you want a cleaner underside.
  • Overhangs: Very deep flute_depth_mm + extreme twist_deg_total can create steeper local angles. If you see drooping, reduce flute depth or twist slightly.
  • Materials: PLA, PETG, and silk filaments all work well. Translucent filaments shine with lower flute depth and higher segments_height.

Tips & troubleshooting

  • Looks faceted? Increase segments_height (e.g., 100–160).
  • Wobbly when tall? Thicken wall_thickness_mm, increase base_thickness_mm, or enable a foot / thin_base.
  • Fragile lip? Add a small rim_bead or reduce mouth_diameter_mm a touch.
  • Too busy? Lower flute_depth_mm, reduce flutes, or keep twist under 90° for a calmer look.
