Not a new idea, but this one is customizable (using OpenSCAD). You can choose gimbal pivots vs. free rotation, size, number of rings etc., and it comes with a relatively relaxed license.

 

Edit: Ooooh… I just realized I forgot to put the parametric model maker file in… now it's there.

Each ring is split into 5 parts for coloring choices.
